The National Gramophonic Society: A brave experiment, 1924-1031

In 1923 Compton Mackenzie changed the record business by founding his magazine The Gramophone. Within months, he tried to do it again by launching a label, the National Gramophonic Society, which would ‘aim at achieving for gramophone music what such societies as the Medici have done for the reproduction of paintings and for the printed book’.
