Andrew Motion - Laurels & Donkeys
Andrew Motion, Poet Laureate (1999-09), introduces his latest book Laurels and Donkeys a collection of war poems presenting scenes from various conflicts of the 20th & 21st centuries - from the First World War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some are elegies, some are satires and some are memories of the poet’s father, who fought in the Second World War. They provoke both shock at what Wilfred Owen called ‘the pity of war’ and dismay at its recurrence.
