Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids - A Journey Through the English Ritual Year

This is a Past Event and has been Archived.

This exhibition brings together 50 photographs of regional rituals performed throughout the year in England. Costumed processions, symbolic dramatizations, traditional dances and fire ceremonies mark the changing seasons and celebrate nature's bounty. Many of these customs claim an ancient origin such as traditions like Jack-in-the-Green, or have pagan heritage like the Celtic festival of Beltane, and are kept alive today by local communities. Award-winning photographer Sara Hannant's vibrant images offer a captivating and surprising glimpse of contemporary 'Merrie England'. Venue: Balcony Gallery Until 9 September 2012

Free.

Every event on WhereCanWeGo has been added by the organisers themselves, so you get a really good feel for what events are about.
If you're organising a public event, you can promote it for FREE by registering here ~ it works so well.
Don't take our word. See what our organisers say:
"Our event was a success due in no small part to your inclusion of it and the fact that yours was the first entry in an internet search for the title of the exhibition. The days of chasing after printed media coverage are over. Where Can We Go gave us excellent coverage and and we would be happy to recommend your service to organisations large and small." - Jock, Herald Events.
"We used it to promote a one day open day and it turned out to be the most effective way of getting visitors; slightly over 1/3 rd came through your site, 1/3 from posters and flyers and rather less than 1/3 from the £1,000 of local press ads we paid for!." - The Midland Gliding Cub.
