The Ones You Love Leader Robin Stowell Biber Battalia á10 Bach Concerto for Two Violins Britten Simple Symphony Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings The “absolutely thrilling” Welsh Sinfonia chamber orchestra makes a welcome return with a string programme especially put together for a perfect Valentine’s Day musical experience. All the works are among the best known and loved of their period, but perhaps one may be a little less so; Biber’s Battalia for 10 strings sounds positively avant garde, although it was written in 1673. Its second movement for instance must have been completely shocking at the time – the simultaneous rendering of eight folk songs in different keys and time signatures to illustrate drunken soldiers!
