Chang-dong Lee. S Korea. 2011. 139 mins. Cert 12A. An ageing woman, facing family criminality and her own dementia, takes solace in becoming a poet. This is a gentle yet intelligent and near flawlessly constructed film, itself both poetic and contemplative in its observation of the flow of daily life as the woman finds the inner strength to write her first lines.

On learning that he faces death, he endeavours to put his affairs and family in order. But fate impedes his path to righteousness. A muscular, bravura film, and Javier Bardem’s performance as Uxbal is consummate.
