Your Valentine

This exhibition presents a stunning and vast array of Valentines Cards, as they used to be before the commercialisation of this national anniversary. On display will be 200 cards from the ‘The Shell Valentine Collection’ and also a selection from the ‘The Laura Seddon Collection of Valentine cards’, dating from the early 19th to the early 20th centuries, on loan from The Manchester Metropolitan University Special Collections. The exhibition traces the heart-strewn history of The Valentine from the early 19th Century onwards; it has romance, sentiment and gushing sincerity with the liberal use of satin ribbon and gilt cupids. In contrast there is also satirical cartoons and cruel verse, expressing the bitterness, and disenfranchisement of loves lost.
