Colin Grant at ’Coventry Conversations’
This is a Past Event and has been Archived.
Divide and Rule? Diane Abbott MP recently caught a lot of flack on the subject. Hopefully, a university setting will be a stimulating environment from which to have a grown-up debate. Author, historian and BBC producer Colin Grant tackles the issue of ‘Divide and Rule’ in a nuanced way; he will also read from in his latest book, I & I: The Natural Mystics – Marley, Tosh and Wailer. This year, Jamaica celebrates 50 years of independence. However, PM Portia Simpson-Miller wants the island to become a Republic. Some believe Jamaica was better off under British rule. Opponents argue that it’s a manifestation of ‘Divide and Rule’ – a theme embedded within much of the Wailers’ music. Grant asks, “Is ‘Divide and Rule’ important for national identity, or national pride?"
