Nowhereisland comes to Barnstaple

Devon-based artist and photographer Alex Hartley is visiting North Devon Arts to tell the story of Nowhereisland and his other recent artworks. Nowhereisland is a floating island nation, devised by Alex as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. It will visit 7 ports & harbours during its south west voyage from the Jurassic Coast to the Bristol Channel between 25th July & 9th September. It will be moored at Ilfracombe from 1-4th Sept. This tour moves one landscape through another, conjuring visions of Arctic exploration & the fragility of a threatened environment. The floating sculpture will expand the view of what art can be & where it can take place, & as a work of land art; it will challenge perceptions and question assumptions about the location & subject matter of art.
