Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (15)

Alec Guinness’s iconic Smiley of the 70s BBC series is a hard act to follow. But this adaptation of Le Carré’s classic novel puts the retired spy catcher even more centre stage, and Gary Oldman produces a winning performance as an altogether grittier character. The old guard at MI6 are discredited and Smiley is brought back to smoke out a traitor amongst the new regime – headed by Toby Jones. A superbly taut thriller, with Oscar and BAFTA nominations galore.
