Tour of Christ the Consoler

Heritage Open Day: In April 1870 Frederick Vyner of Newby Hall was one of a party of tourists travelling from Marathon to Athens. The group was captured by brigands and four men including Frederick were murdered. Lady Mary Vyner commissioned the architect William Burges to design a church in memory of her son. The result was the Church of Christ the Consoler, one of Burges's finest works and an outstanding example of High Victorian design and decoration. At 1500 on Thursday 6th, Friday 7th
