How Bees Choose Flowers
Brecon and Radnor Beekeepers invite you to join us in welcoming Dominic Clarke, researcher in bee perception and behaviour at Bristol University, who's coming to tell us about his latest fascinating research into the electric relations between bees and flowers! He writes: BUZZING BEES CAN SENSE ELECTRIC CHARGE... You can't feel it, but you are surrounded by electric fields everywhere you go. Every time you move you generate electric charge and every time you step outside you are surrounded by the atmospheric electric field. Even flowers exhibit small electric fields as they compete for the attention of bees and other pollinators. To bees, these electric fields provide crucial information that they use to assess the quality of the flower and decide whether or not to visit it. Electric fields play a greater role in the lives of bees than anyone had imagined...
