Appleby Archaeology Group: The lead tokens from Holm Cultram abbey

Poorly understood in Britain, these lead tokens, the majority located by metal detectorists, see only a tiny proportion of all those found nationally as coming from dateable contexts. Tokens were frequently used as an alternative to small denomination currency from around 1200 through to the 19th century and should be seen as a ‘chit for service’ rather than as a monetary substitute. Kate discusses the Lead Tokens recovered from the excavations at Holme Cultram Abbey in 2015.
