The Accrington Pals - a talk by Les Bond

The Accrington Pals is probably the best remembered of the battalions raised in the early months of World War 1 in response to Kitchener's call for a volunteer army. Groups of friends and work mates, not just from Accrington but also Blackburn and the neighbouring districts, enlisted together to form a battalion with a distinctively local identity. Recruitment began on 14 September 1914 with 104 men signing up in the first three hours. Ten days later the battalion had reached full stren
