Martin Crampin: Patterns, Monsters & Mysteries
Another month another new exhibition at the gallery. The show is based on patterns and imagery from medieval decorative and architectural arts.
The visual imagery used in the Christian faith in the Middle Ages helped the mostly illiterate congregation to understand the faith’s teachings – a context that is somewhat alien to a contemporary audience. Before the Reformation, visual art flourished and returned briefly in the 19th century as hundreds of churches were either built or restored.
Open Wed-Sat, 10-5pm. Private View: Sat 2 Aug from 2pm. Admission free!
