Heritage Open Day: Manor house open from 1000-1600. Free tours of the house 1000-1500. Rothamsted Manor evolved from a modest dwelling on this site from as early as the 13th century. The south front is due to 17th century additions and alterations by Sir John Wittewronge. The most famous inhabitant of the house was Sir John Bennet Lawes (1814-1900) who began agricultural research at Rothamsted, which today is continued by Rothamsted Research of which the manor is an integral part.
