Birkenhead Central Library
Heritage Open Day: Birkenhead has a long history of library provision. Its first library dated from 1856 while the present Central Library celebrates 80 years of service this year. Opened in 1934 by King George V, it replaced the Carnegie Library in Market Street, itself opened in 1909, but demolished to make way for the Mersey Tunnel. See the stained glass window, commemorating Wilfred Owen. Talk and tour at 2.15pm, meet in foyer.
