Unexpected Festival: The Great Fete
In August 2014 the world marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. In Exeter the recruitment of civilians into the forces began in earnest in August 1914. These recruitment events captured the spirit of that time when nobody expected the war to last so long or for the losses to be so severe. Unexpected has created a reinterpretation of the enthusiastic, optimistic recruitment events which encouraged the men and boys from Exeter to enlist in 1914.
