Recollections of Imperial Rome in Anglo-Saxon Art

When the Anglo-Saxons first arrived on Britain's shores, legends of the Roman Empire were nourished by encounters with ruined 'works of giants.' At the same time, pockets of Roman cultural legacy still survived among the Britons. Anglo-Saxon kings yearned to step into the line of imperial succession; their goldsmiths drew inspiration from the trappings of the legions. The art, of which the ruling class were patrons, speaks of imperium. Join Amy
