Understanding the ancient mountain belts of the North Atlantic borderlands
An inaugural lecture by Rob Strachan, Professor of Geology at the University of Portsmouth. The Caledonian mountain belt of Scotland, East Greenland and Scandinavia formed ~430 million years ago as a result of plate collisions that culminated in formation of Earth’s most recent supercontinent, Pangaea. The later breakup of Pangaea dispersed the eroded remnants of the Caledonides around the North Atlantic borderlands. In this lecture I will show how a combination of fieldwork and laboratory-based
