Black Plays - Post-colonial Beginnings
This session engages with issues of decolonisation in Africa during the late 1950s and 60s. Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya are the focus of the plays in question and, whilst these nations have different political, linguistic, and cultural concerns, the plays shed a light on aspirations amongst African and African diasporic communities in the mid-20th century. The plays in question give voice to the brutality of imperialism and bring to light the suffering and resistance of the African communit
