SANHS - Exmoor Forest

A talk on Exmoor Forest to mark the 200th anniversary of its disafforestation in 1817 by Mary Sirault.

The Royal Forest of Exmoor was for centuries a preserved hunting ground but mainly used for livestock grazing. A scheme to convert it to a profitable and productive demesne farm was a failure as was a planned railway but farms were established, a parish was created and a small village grew up at Simonsbath.
