Venus and Adonis

Venus and Adonis by W. Shakespeare

In 1593, an outbreak of the plague in London caused the city authorities to close all the public playhouses. Shakespeare set about what he would publish as “the first heir [sic] of my invention” – the poem Venus and Adonis with a plot based on passages from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
