The inspiration of singing in seventeenth century England, Dowland's First Book of Ayres in 1597 marked the arrival in print of a new performance ideal: a solo voice and one instrument, as the compelling way to move the heart and soul in everything from love lyrics to deepest darkness and theatre-inspired virtuosity. Internationally recognised counter tenor Robin Blaze takes on the lute song repertory from Dowland through to the glories of Henry Purcell,
