The liminal space: understanding imprisonment and detention comparatively
A professorial inaugural lecture by Francis Pakes, Professor in Criminology, University of Portsmouth. Prisons are strange and often foul places. Re-offending rates are high. But does it have to be so? Comparative research can offer an alternative: cleaner, quieter prisons with more rehabilitative success. This lecture considers what lessons can be learned studying prisons and imprisonment abroad: can prisons even ‘work’ at all?
Free admission but must book a place. Time 6-7pm, followed by a drinks reception.
