Zeppelin Nights: London in the First World War by Jerry White

31st May 2015 marks the centenary of the first ever bomb to be dropped on London.
It was an incendiary, striking 16 Alkham Road N16. A few minutes later came the first casualties of this new form of warfare, two young sisters May & Elsie Leggatt. From then on the air war against London was waged with intermittent ferocity. In all 668 Londoners would be killed and another 1,938 injured. Throughout the campaign Hackney would be in the front line.
