St James's Church

Heritage Open Day: The Church is Pugin's very first church design. The foundation stone was laid in December 1837. Extensions were added in the 20th century. Built in the Norman style it is a rarity among Pugin's designs. Completed in 1840, it was among the first Catholic churches to be built in England after the Reformation and is sited over the ruins of Reading Abbey.
