Under the Archway - Rose Hill and the Victorian Middle Class

Heritage Open Day: Local historian Allan Brigham leads a gentle walk around Rose Hill, the first housing estate in Dorking, built for the new Victorian middle classes. Pass under a mock Tudor archway to find houses surrounding an oval paddock grazed by sheep. Amongst the first residents were Clement Attlee's grandfather & Alfred Russel Wallace, explorer and naturalist and the man who almost scooped Darwin!
