Rome’s Greatest Defeat: Battle of The Teutoburg Forest with Ben Kane

In AD 9, the Roman Empire covered most of Europe. Forty years of rule under the emperor Augustus had seen widespread military victories and vast expansions in its territories. September of that year saw everything change, however, at a place called the Teutoburg Forest in northern Germany. Three legions were ambushed and massacred there by tribesmen who followed Arminius, a Romanised German. It was a humiliating reverse for Augustus, and a body blow to the empire and its army.
