Culture and democracy
A public lecture by Thomas Docherty, Professor of English and of Comparative Literature, University of Warwick. Culture is what happens when the ordinary becomes extraordinary, when we extend the self to encompass that which seemed alien or foreign, distant. Democracy calls upon us to find a way of understanding the world anew, and engaging the world by making it, together, even over a distance. Professor Docherty will argue that democracy is possible only when culture happens.
