Making the desert bloom: the rise and fall of sustainable farming in three ancient deserts

A public lecture by David Gilbertson, Emeritus Professor of Geography, Plymouth University. Water management and agricultural systems sustained farming and settlement through millennia in the deserts of Arizona, Libya and Jordan. Many fell into decay, although some still function with unexpected geographical consequences, as Professor Gilbertson explains with fascinating insight. This is a joint lecture with the Royal Geographical Society Southern Branch.
