Sutton Hoo - Historia talk; Dr Sam Newton

The Dream-ship of Sutton Hoo. We begin with examples of ship- and boat-burial in early England before climbing aboard the greatest of them all, the famous dream-inspired discovery berthed beneath the Mound One at Sutton Hoo. We shall see how the use of the ship as a funeral-vessel implies that death was viewed as a point of embarkation for a voyage to a heavenly haven over the horizon, out of sight of mortal shores. This implication is amplified by Old English poetry, especially the epic of Beo
