St Laurence Church

Heritage Open Day: St Laurence Church is an ancient building rich in heritage and yet still in daily use. The church was originally built in 1121 and was extended to its current size in 1196. Never actually part of the Abbey, which was the site of pilgrimage, the Church was built outside the Abbey Gate for the people of Reading. Past congregants include Jane Austen and Queen Elizabeth, who attended so often that she was allotted a regular seat. This 12th century Church has many ancient features
