Northern Noir: Politics, Society, Culture in Economic Hard Times
WEA Adult Education Course - The depression of the 1930s produced massive social change. We will examine this through the major writers of the period and in particular D H Lawrence, Walter Greenwood and George Orwell. Three books in particular: Lawrence's Sons and Lovers (1913), Greenwood's Love on the Dole (1932) and Orwell's The Road to Wigan Pier (1937) will be used to help illustrate the social, economic and political worlds of the first third of the twentieth-century.
