Shrewsbury Bookfest Remembers George Butterworth
George Butterworth belonged to a generation of composers known as the ‘pastoral school’ who took their inspiration from rural life in England. His works, sadly so few, include the much-loved song cycle A Shropshire Lad and the orchestral idyll The Banks of Green Willow. During the First World War Butterworth served as a Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry. He was awarded the MC though he did not live to receive it. Like Vaughan Williams and Gurney he set the poems of A E Housman to music. He
