Shrewsbury Bookfest Remembers Rupert Brooke

The many thousands who joined up before conscription was introduced in 1916 were bound to include men with a literary turn of mind who could write about their experiences or vividly imagine them. Many were fresh from public school encouraged by the examples of classical heroes, medieval knights or gentlemen sportsmen. The embodiment of the ideal was Rupert Brooke whose poetry inspired a nation but who, nonetheless, was killed by a mosquito bite without ever hearing a gun fired in anger. Talk t
