Concert by Hertfordshire Chorus: Elgar, The Kingdom, St Albans Cathedral
Hertfordshire Chorus return to St Albans Cathedral with the London Orchestra da Camera and soloists Eleanor Dennis, Diana Moore, Ben Johnson, and James Platt to present Elgar's Choral masterpiece, The Kingdom.
In The Kingdom, Elgar tells of the transformation of the apostles from frightened disciples into bold evangelists after Jesus’s death. It is well known for Mary’s solo ’The sun goeth down’ which is sung after the arrest of the Apostles. It is one of the most haunting things that Elgar ever wrote.
Their previous performance of The Kingdom in St Albans earned high praise from Martin Bird, Review Editor of the Elgar Society Journal, who wrote: "The Hertfordshire Chorus was a revelation. I’ve been singing in and conducting choirs, large and small, professional and amateur, for half a century, and the blend of sound, the tone, and consistent accuracy were something that I would normally expect to hear only in the best chamber choirs, amateur or professional."
7:30pm start, doors open 6:45pm. Tickets priced from £12 to £25, £5 for children under 18. Full wheelchair access. Tickets are available from the Cathedral box office: online at www.stalbanscathedral.org; in person 10am to 4:45pm Monday to Friday, 3:45pm Saturday & 1pm to 5pm Sunday; and by phone on 01727 890290 during box office hours.
