When the Oaks Fired: England's Worst Mining Disaster

1:15pm, December 12 December 1866. A huge explosion was heard throughout Barnsley. Word spread quickly, ‘the Oaks has fired’. The Oaks Disaster was the worst mining disaster in Victorian Britain and remains the worst mining disaster in English history.
