Sinfonia of Cambridge - From The Heart of Europe
The brilliant young French pianist Patrick Hammerlé, familiar to Cambridge audiences as musician-in-residence at Clare Hall, joins the orchestra under its musical director Howard Williams for its first concert of 2017, celebrating music steeped in the culture and history of Central Europe.
‘The Fair Melusina’, Mendelssohn’s overture inspired by a folktale about a doomed mermaid, is an exuberant evocation of the mythology and sounds of the sea; Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no.4 in G major, while dating from the heyday of the Viennese classical period, shares something of the same Romantic sensibility.
After the interval, Dvorák’s 7th Symphony, written in the aftermath of bereavement but shaped by his passion for national identity and liberation, transforms the anguish of loss into a triumphant message of hope.
