A Job For Life: The History Of Apprenticeship And Guilds

Over the centuries, formal apprenticeship has been the main mechanism through which skilled trades such as shoemaking, weaving, carpentry and stone masonry have been learned. Guilds, too, have been in existence since the middle ages to protect the rights of local businessmen and to regulate trade.
