Explore the fascinating history of an airfield open from1917 (The Royal Flying Corps), to the RAF formed on 1st April 1918... so was involved in two World Wars...
It was the prime military and civilian aircraft testing establishment between those wars.
Following its time as Fighter station in World War 2 (with both British AND American fighters operating), Aircraft testing and development continued into the Jet Age - till its closure in 1963.
