Ancient Civilisations Course:
Poacher Turned Gamekeeper:
Auguste Mariette and the Rescuing
of Ancien
Self-taught Egyptologist Auguste Mariette (1821–
1881) sent by the Louvre to collect manuscripts,
instead spent the money on excavating his sensational
discovery of the Serapeum. His finds went to the
Louvre, but he later became the champion of keeping
finds in Egypt. As the initial keeper of the first Egyptian
Museum, he famously refused to give jewels to
Empress Eugenie, and excavated and restored most
of the celebrated Egyptian monuments.
