Vaughan Williams was a huge creative and compassionate influence on the history of 20th century English music. In 1914 he volunteered to serve in the Field Ambulance Service in Flanders during which time he was deeply affected by the carnage and the loss of close friends such as Butterworth. He survived the war and had a long and extensive career composing for nearly every musical genre.
