Messiah is Handel's most popular work and has become one of the most renowned pieces of English sacred music. The majority of his music was popular during his lifetime and then fell into obscurity, but the Messiah has endured.
It has strong historic associations with Leicestershire. The first parish performance of Messiah was at Church Langton. The Leicester Philharmonic Choir chose the work for their first concert on Christmas Day 1886.
