Five Hundred Years of Englishness – Simon Heffer

In the 500th anniversary year of the Protestant Reformation, it is an appropriate time to look at how the course of English history took a distinct turn after Martin Luther gave Henry VIII the means to set up his own church in 1534, and how England’s break from the European cultural mainstream at that point set it apart from much of the rest of the continent: and what the economic, political, cultural and social consequences of that new direction were, and how they help us understand a coherent
