With music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, the story is taken from the book by Thomas Meehan on which the popular Harold Gray comic strip ‘Little Orphan Annie’ was based. Set in 1930s New York during the Great Depression: the timeless tale of a young girl forced into living a life of misery and torment in a municipal orphanage managed by the infamous matron, Miss Hannigan (Saskia Fuchs). Annie, (played by Kate Woodman and Mabel Edwards) is a determined young lady whose only dream is to be reunited with her real family. Eventually she manages to escape and finds a new friend in the form of a large shaggy dog who she names ‘Sandy’. Sadly, Miss Hannigan manages to track Annie down and takes her back to the orphanage. Then, by chance, Annie’s luck changes when she is invited by the secretary of a rich benefactor to spend Christmas at his home. Here exciting possibilities arise for Annie, however, Miss Hannigan has designs to cash in on Annie’s good fortune.
