An illustrated talk by John Wilson We hope to organise a Trip to have a harbour cruise on the full size replica ’Matthew’ in June, but whether or not that comes to pass, the history of the original vessel and its modern replica should prove to be a fascinating subject. John Wilson, a Naval Officer for 25 years, is a trustee of the Matthew of Bristol and also had 20+ years in the Defence Industry. He is a volunteer crewman and responsible for training and education. The explorer John Cabot sailed in The Matthew from Bristol to Newfoundland in 1497. Enthusiasts in Bristol built a replica in 1994-6 and in 1997 re-enacted Cabot’s original voyage. The Matthew is owned and funded by a registered charity and relies heavily on volunteer support. At 78 feet long you will understand what a challenge it must have been for both crews ancient and modern to tackle the North Atlantic.
2.00pm for 2.30pm All welcome, members £ 2, guests £ 3, no need to book. Light refreshments will be served after the talk.
