Thomas Williams, The Copper King

Thomas Williams was born in Anglesey in 1737. Becoming the active partner in the Parys Mountain copper mine, he was described by Matthew Boulton as ‘the despotick sovereign of the copper trade’, having successfully moved against an established smelting cartel by establishing or purchasing his own facilities. These included, in 1788, those at Temple Island, near Marlow, where he became resident.
