London Handel Festival 2017 - Faramondo
Faramondo is a spicy tale of warring houses and love triangles, written in 1737 with Handel at the peak of his
creative powers. The libretto by Apostelo Zeno tells of Pharamond, the 5th century ruler of legend, reputedly
the first King of France, and the many superb arias and duets make this one of Handel’s more mature works
which has been undeservedly overshadowed.
The opera was first performed at the King's Theatre, in the Haymarket in London, on 3 January 1738. There
