London Handel Festival 2017 - Joseph & His Brethren
Handel wrote Joseph & His Brethren in 1743 to a libretto by James Miller, based on the familiar biblical
story in Genesis which tells of Joseph’s elevation in the court of the Pharoah, the love between him and
Asenath, daughter of the High Priest and his eventual reconciliation with his brothers. It is rarely
performed and has been unjustly neglected, especially considering that it was so popular in Handel’s day.
Audiences will not be disappointed with the usual heady mixture of lively and
