Opera Settecento make a welcome return to the Festival and continue their discovery of Handel pasticcio operas
with Ormisda, the story of a wicked stepmother, determined to elevate her own son to the throne of Persia, displacing
his elder half-brother. Tossed like a chattel between the two brothers is the Queen of Armenia, in love with the younger brother but destined to marry whichever becomes King of Persia. Ormisda was premiered in the King’s Theatre, Haymarket in April 1730. The recitative
